Context
After the death of Queen Elizabeth 1 the 17th century England had many changes in monarchy, a civil war, a Lord Protector, the death of Shakespeare, Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America. Plague of London. Fire of London (destroying 2/3rds of the city).
These boxes, also called desk boxes or slope, did not necessarily contain a bible. They may contain paperwork or small items as their counterpart the coffer would contain larger items. Drawers were not in use until the later part of the century.
Backs were plain as they would be placed against a surface and not seen whereas the front would often be carved with traditional patterns. Locks and metal straps would be fitted to keep valuables safe, as houses were more public places at that time.
This bible box was constructed and has survived during this time. As useful and functional then as it is now. It would fit into any interior whether traditional or modern as a focal point or part of a collection.
How many people have owned and used it over the years. Who were they?
An exceptional piece of furniture with a fascinating history.
