Description
This much loved cultural and botanical icon of the Seychelles is known as the "Coconut of the Sea" (Lodoicea maldivica) it is endemic to the islands. It can only be found in two places, Praslin and Curieuse. There are only 8000 mature trees in existence today and it is now endangered. It is the largest and heaviest seed in the world, a fascinating case of island gigantism and is coveted by collectors. European nobles in the sixteenth century would often have the shells of these nuts polished and decorated with valuable jewels as collectibles for their private collection. This rare example is complete and undamaged.
